Reduction of FBI Name Check Backlog

March 5, 2009

USCIS announced yesterday that it eliminated the backlog for Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) name checks pending more than 6 months. This is a noteworthy improvement from 16 months ago when more than 349,000 name checks were pending, with nearly 150,000 pending for more than 6 months.

The next goal is to complete name check requests pending more than 90 days by May 30, 2009.

Name checks must be completed and cleared by the FBI before USCIS may approve certain immigration applications and petitions. This process has led to tremendous delays to many I-485 cases.
